The
Prime Minister met with the Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I
on her recent trip to Turkey. The Patriarch welcomed the
Australian Government's recent investment into a new Antipodes
Centre for Greek culture, heritage and language in Melbourne's CBD.
The Patriarch also expressed appreciation for the Gillard
Government's recent grant to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of
Australia to help complete the second phase of the Bribie Island
Youth Campus. During the meeting, the Prime Minister and the
Patriarch discussed global environmental issues. The Prime
Minister briefed the Patriarch on the government's sustainability
and environmental initiatives, including our plans to protect
Australia's marine environment through the creation of marine
national parks. The Patriarch said Australia was well placed
to contribute to global environmental efforts. The Prime Minister
and Patriarch also discussed interfaith dialogue, on which the
Patriarch has taken a leading role internationally, and the
Government's current review of school funding. |
